55% of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050, it’s expected this number will grow to roughly 68%, as every day roughly 1,3 million people move into urban areas. In the US alone, $160 million has been invested in researching smart city technologies that help improve safety, reduce traffic congestion and monitor the quality of the environment to better understand climate change and act on improving the health of natural resources.

  • Sustainability is driving investment in nearly half of infrastructure investments driven by an increased focus on understanding and improving the impact of climate change, building resilience and creating sustainable communities.
  • Energy Efficiency - Smart cities using data from smart technologies are on track to achieve a 30% reduction in energy use in the next 20 years. In Lansing, Michigan, 40% of the city’s public energy costs were associated with street lighting. By using smart lighting, which regulates the amount of light based on the levels needed to satisfy residents, the energy use and costs were reduced by 70%.
  • Safety and Security – Edge devices such as cameras and sensors to monitor images, sound and air quality help communities mitigate and respond to crime. And public and private wireless networks are enabling residents and first responders to have reliable connections when needed most.
