Beijing, China, Oct 9, 2018Ruckus Networks, an ARRIS company, today announced the installation of the 10,000th Wi-Fi access point at the Beijing Capital Normal University (CNU), as part of a broad-ranging network upgrade program to address both current and future demands on the university network.

The upgrade is due to the university network seeing surging data traffic volumes, in part due to the launch of the first CNU WeChat official account, which is being used a “Star Teacher Classroom” application.

The new CNU WeChat official account provides a central repository of university information, including functions such as “Bulletin Board”, “Class Group Chat”, “My Campus Card”, “My Dormitory”, and “Registration Process”, all of which are accessible via a smartphone or tablet. Students can also receive university notifications through their mobile phones, by subscribing to the CNU WeChat official account.

Separately, the Star Teacher Classroom supports online learning, interactive classrooms, resource integration and massive open online courses (MOOC).

“The great success of the Star Teacher Classroom and the WeChat official account are closely tied to a stable network connection. Our teachers and students rely on the WeChat official account for campus information, course arrangement and other information,” said Hu Yingbin, director of the Digital Campus Construction Center, CNU.

Ruckus Networks was selected to provide CNU with smart Wi-Fi products in 2014, with additional network and equipment upgrades. The CNU network features a 10 Gigabit-per-second fiber optic backbone, which supports both campus wired and wireless networks, as well as networks for campus cards, security monitoring, multimedia teaching, and cable television. Ruckus technology is an important component of CNU’s network architecture and plays a pivotal role in the construction of the CNU Smart Campus.

“After deploying Ruckus smart Wi-Fi products, CNU’s wireless network is currently accessible by nearly 25,000 teachers and students daily, with approximately 35,000 terminals constantly connected. The network is expected to support 200,000 users in the future,” said Hu.

Ruckus has installed a number of indoor Wi-Fi access points such as the R710, H500, and R500 which are suitable for high-density network environments to provide industry-leading networking performance and reliability. Patented Ruckus BeamFlex™ adaptive antenna and ChannelFly™ dynamic channel management technologies reduce the co-channel interference within the CNU network, for reliable access to the terminal equipment, as well as ensuring a high-performing network for online study applications on mobile devices.

With six major campuses throughout Beijing, CNU placed great emphasis on the efficiency and convenience of network management during the construction of the CNU Smart Campus program, which aims to offer integrated information services to faculty and students. The Ruckus SmartCell™ 200 Gateway (SCG 200) was deployed as the WLAN controller for the CNU campus, providing an integrated carrier-class element management system (EMS) that enables rapid deployment. This has simplified network management across all the CNU campuses, resulting in both manpower and cost savings.

“Teachers and students can watch live video streams on their mobile device seamlessly and across the campus. Ruckus stands out by enabling stable and reliable network performance during large-scale campus events, such as the student welcome ceremony, sports meets, and anniversary celebrations,” said Hu.

CNU is one of the first universities in China to join eduroam, a secure, worldwide roaming wireless network developed for the international research and education community. Over 80 countries and regions around the world have participated in eduroam, enabling their users to conveniently roam within alliance networks simply by using internal network usernames and passwords. Thanks to Ruckus, the robust Wi-Fi platform also provides a smooth online experience for eduroam members when visiting the CNU intranet.

“Compared with other vendors, Ruckus Networks offers a more scalable network solution tailored to the education sector, which enables more flexible and simpler infrastructure management as well as stable and high-density networking services,” said Dong Haojing, General Manager of Beijing TC-Technology Co., Ltd., the solution integrator of the project and a partner of Ruckus Networks. “This matches perfectly with the growing number of network-connected devices on campus and meets the demands of today’s digital teaching environment.”

“Higher-education institutions understand the importance of high-performance Wi-Fi networks for digital learning and for teaching,” said David Deng, general manager of China, Ruckus Networks. “Ruckus has extensive experience in the deployment of campus networks, with over 60 successful wired and wireless solutions deployments in universities and colleges across China, including Ji’nan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Xi`an University of Posts & Telecommunications, Dalian Neusoft University of Information, and Southwest University of Political Science and Law. We are excited to enable the future of education with our partners and customers in the higher-education market with our industry-leading technology and expertise.”
