SUNNYVALE and SAN LEANDRO, CA – July 27, 2015 – Ruckus Wireless, Inc. (NYSE: RKUS) announced today that the City of San Leandro has selected, deployed and standardized a new, free outdoor Smart Wi-Fi service, which is the first of its kind in the Bay Area that is gigabit-capable, leveraging the new 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. San Leandro becomes the eighth city within the San Francisco Bay Area to have selected Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi as the foundation for their public Wi-Fi network infrastructures.  Other cities include San Jose, San Francisco, Mountain View, Hayward, Redwood City, San Mateo and Belmont, CA.

Tweet this [ruckus-svg:social-twitter]Able to support thousands of users at connection speeds ranging from 100 megabits per second up to one gigabit per second, San Leandro’s new Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi network will initially provide free high-speed wireless Internet access within a four-block radius, including: all of Pelton Plaza and surrounding properties, The Village, Parrott Street (including the Farmers’ Market), and parts of Juana Avenue and East 14th Street. Over time, San Leandro plans to build upon the initial installation and expand its free public Wi-Fi coverage to other surrounding areas, including the City-owned Marina Community Center on Wicks Boulevard.

The City of San Leandro launched this public/private partnership to help bring its Wi-Fi network to life. During the deployment over the past year, Ruckus and its integration partner, SmartWAVE Technologies, have been providing Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi equipment and ongoing technical and engineering support to the City’s IT Department. This has resulted in the creation of one of the most cutting-edge, free public Wi-Fi services now available in the San Francisco Bay Area, at minimal cost to the City.

“In partnership with Ruckus and SmartWAVE, San Leandro has now delivered a world-class public Wi-Fi service that offers some of the fastest speeds available anywhere within the Bay Area, and we’ve made it available to the community,” said San Leandro Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter.   “Not only has Wi-Fi become an expected utility in this new digital age, it has become an essential tool for economic development for cities everywhere.”

“The proliferation of Wi-Fi on all kinds of new smart mobile phones, tablets, sensors and Internet of Things devices is driving incredible new demands for faster and higher capacity Wi-Fi networks across this country and around the world,” said Dan Rabinovitsj, Chief Operating Officer at Ruckus Wireless.  “In today's connected world, access to the Internet should be considered an essential service, like water or electricity; and just like water and electricity, it should be available to everyone – regardless of circumstance.”

San Leandro’s new free public Wi-Fi service is powered by new Ruckus ZoneFlex™ T300 Series outdoor Smart Wi-Fi access points that integrate 802.11ac gigabit Wi-Fi technology, along with a patented adaptive directional antenna system that extends the distance and strength of signals to deliver higher data rates to more users trying to access the network at the same time.  The Ruckus access points are connected via an extensive high-speed fiber optic network operated by Lit San Leandro.

The City of San Leandro, Ruckus and SmartWAVE will publicly launch the new free Wi-Fi Service at a ceremony in Farmer’s Market in San Leandro at 6 p.m. PDT on Wednesday, July 29, 2015.
