Features and Benefits
Virtualizing the headend has several advantages, including performance gains, cost savings, and improved network management. Whether you’re operating an access network or an aggregation network, virtualized headend solutions support the elastic scaling and service agility you need to effectively modernize your headend operations. This is especially true in today’s dynamic Internet services environment. With vBNG Evo™, CommScope’s disaggregated Virtualized Broadband Network Gateway (vBNG) router, you can address the greater diversity of PON, G.FAST, and 5G FWA broadband technologies as you grow and evolve your network.

CommScope's versatile MSR Multi-Service Router Series supports a variety of routing and switching functions at the edge of access and aggregation networks, including the option to configure the router to support vBNG Evo™ operation with line rate 3-tier QoS of 6,000 to 20,000 subscribers, depending on which switch you choose to deploy. MSRs use Open Compute Project (OCP) certified switching hardware, which supports the separation of the control plane and the user plane running on the hardware switch. This unique, disaggregated design—leveraged from the vBNG Evo™— enables you to deploy MSR routers closer to the edge of your network while operating the control plane from a remote, centralized location. The result? A dynamic, disaggregated hardware switching solution that lets you easily keep pace with today’s rapidly evolving Internet services.

Powered by a suite of switches that use next-generation silicon from a noted vendor, you can deploy MSR routers in a variety of configurations, including:

  • vBNG Evo™ Virtualized Broadband Network Gateway
  • Broadband Network Gateway (BNG)
  • L2/L3 aggregation switch
  • Carrier Ethernet Services Edge Router
  • Top-of-Rack switch

This operational flexibility supports CommScope’s full range of Cable and Telco access and core products, including Next-Generation Node PON, providing you with an end-to-end solution for whatever network you currently operate.

MSR routers run off Network Operating System (NOS) software, which is easily portable across the MSR’s multiple hardware configurations. NOS supports MSR router deployments with either local or centralized control planes, which gives you the option of hosting the control plane directly on the switch. The MSR router’s disaggregated design enables a single control plane to control large numbers of user/data planes, including user/data planes from third-party vendors, providing you with the ability to quickly and easily scale your network to meet both demand and growth.
In either localized or centralized control plane configurations, the control plane performs a variety of functions, including provisioning and management, subscriber sessions management, routing, and policy and security. MSR routers also support open APIs to third-party controllers for orchestration, management, and monitoring functions.

MSRs provide high performance, low-latency packet forwarding across 10G, 25G, 100G, and 400G interfaces. MSR-800 models feature 48 x SFP+ switch ports that support 1 GbE or 10 GbE each; MSR-2400 models feature 64 x SFP+ switch ports that support 10/25 GbE each. Both models are mountable in a standard, 19-inch rack. You can use MSR router ports for access or uplink operation; you can also configure MSR router access ports and/or subscriber sessions to support downstream traffic shaping and upstream policing.

BNG Features
  • Dynamic subscriber management for IPoE (DHCP) and PPPoE subscribers
  • MS-800: Support for 6,000 subscribers with QoS shaping per subscriber
  • MS-2400: Support for 20,000 subscribers with QoS shaping per subscriber
  • IPV4 only, IPV6 only, or dual-stack subscribers
  • Local pools using DHCPv4 or v6 to provide addresses to subscribers
  • Three-level hierarchical QoS shaping of downstream subscriber traffic
  • Hierarchical upstream policing
  • 1+1 control plane and N+1 switch plane redundancy

MPLS Provider Edge and Aggregation Features
  • L2VPN point-to-point (E-LINE) and point to multi-point (E-LAN) over MPLS
  • MPLS LER Functionality
  • RSVP-TE based fast re-route signaling
  • Policing and shaping of traffic at ingress into aggregation switch (access and core direction)
  • 1+1 switch redundancy
