SYSTIMAX Solutions™, the worldwide leader in structured connectivity solutions, today announced that it plans to donate 100,000 feet of SYSTIMAX® GigaSPEED® XL Category 6 non-plenum data cable to Levine Children’s Hospital, part of Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS), being built in Charlotte, North Carolina. The donation is part of a community-wide effort to build a state-of-the-art pediatric medical center to serve the growing number of children in the Charlotte area, which is expected to increase by 23 percent over the next eight years.
“We already are operating at full capacity, so we knew we needed to build this hospital to plan for the future growth in the area,” said Betty Kuhn, senior director of development services for the Carolinas Healthcare Foundation, the charitable arm of CHS. “It also was important to build this hospital in the most financially efficient way possible, and that is why gifts like the one from SYSTIMAX Solutions are so crucial. The cabling they will provide for this project will last us well into the future.”
The total cost of the Levine Children’s Hospital project will be an estimated $85 million. Fundraising efforts and in-kind donations from CHS employees and executives, private donations and friends of the hospital, such as SYSTIMAX Solutions, are expected to raise $60 million of that amount.
“Of all enterprise applications for our product, hospital environments prove one of the most critical. Large digital medical files need to be able to be transferred in as little time as possible and require the cabling infrastructure to support that kind of bandwidth need,” said Peter Karlsson, senior vice president of sales for CommScope’s enterprise business. “We are more than happy to contribute to making the Levine Children’s Hospital dream a reality so that it can have the infrastructure to support its long-term needs.”
The SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED XL Solution combines the simplicity and versatility of copper cabling with support for the most demanding gigabit applications. With performance well beyond Category 6 specifications and transmissions almost three times quicker than Category 5e solutions, the GigaSPEED XL Solution gives desktop systems less downtime and more bandwidth-intensive throughput than ever before. It is an ideal choice for businesses whose applications require real-time data, fast file transfers and streaming media. In addition, its superior performance across a 250MHz frequency range offers potential for multi-gigabit throughput in the future.
Forty-one patents have been granted on innovations that help the GigaSPEED XL Solution achieve a breakthrough in Category 6/Class E copper cabling performance.
Today ~ The Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center
The Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) treats an average of 130 children each day – more children than any other hospital in North Carolina. Located on the seventh floor of CMC, the current facility houses a 78-bed general pediatrics unit, a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a Neonatal Progressive Care Nursery, a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and a Children’s Specialty Center. Named by Child Magazine as one of the top 25 children’s hospitals in the country, the hospital serves as the regional referral center for certain pediatric transplants and pediatric surgical services.
Tomorrow ~ Levine Children’s Hospital
To accommodate projected growth of up to 95,000 children in this community during the next decade, CMC will open Levine Children’s Hospital – a 12-story, 234-bed facility designed with family-centered care as a top priority. The hospital will feature larger patient rooms to better meet the needs of children and their families, a new Family Resource Center with a pediatric health library and work stations, a 13-bed rehabilitation unit, and extensive child life program areas and resources.
Scheduled to open in 2007, Levine Children Hospital will be the third largest children’s facility in the Southeast and will offer several of the region’s “firsts,” such as the first day hospital, cardiac intensive care unit, and 24-hour pediatric emergency department.
