Cell virtualization, a breakthrough technique pioneered by CommScope and employed in the OneCell C-RAN small cell solution, allows multiple users to share the same wireless frequencies without interference, effectively multiplying wireless capacity. The OneCell® indoor wireless solution from CommScope, enables mobile operators to affordably meet the growing demand for indoor LTE service and easily transition to 5G when they're ready. When deployed inside commercial buildings and public venues, OneCell creates an intelligent "super" cell, eliminating cell borders, handover issues and interference. Programmable radio points enable operators to modify baseband processing and migrate to more advanced radio technologies, like 5G NR, with a software upgrade. OneCell deploys over standard Ethernet LANs, making it faster and less costly to deploy.

Ben Cardwell, Senior Vice President and Segment Leader at CommScope, sees an increased need for indoor coverage: "In the past [operators] have focused mostly on public-access venues - big, big venues where lots of people go. Those have been done. Those are big buildings, big systems. Going forward, we will need to move into those second- and third-tier buildings that are more in the 200.000 to 500.000 sq ft size. These new systems will need to be much lower cost and be deployable by a different type of professional." To address this market, CommScope has developed OneCell "a cloud-RAN approach to in-building, giving maximum capacity utilization in a building," told us Ben.
